College: Letters of Recommendation

College applications

PLEASE NOTE: I no longer accept college recommendation requests for 2012-2013 year.

Applying to college can be tiresome and frustrating. You can ease the process by starting early during your junior year. Summer is a great time to visit schools, write your resume/senior profile, record your Demo CD or prepare your portfolio.

If you would like me to write you a letter of recommendation, I'll be happy to do it IF YOU FOLLOW THE FOLLOWING STEPS:

        1.   Ask me, and the sooner the better. I can only write a limited number of recommendations, as each one takes a lot of time to write.

        2.  Submit the answers to my questions as quickly as possible. For juniors, sometime during the summer would be great. For seniors, you'd have to do it as soon as you can. You don't need to give me the applications and envelopes right away; I'll need to write the letter first.

       3.   Answer the following questions and e-mail them to me as soon as possible - in a word document attachment. Please answer the questions thoughtfully so I can write a better recommendation for you!

 Questions for Letters of Recommendation

What major are you applying to? If you're undecided, list your major interests.

What positive adjectives would you use to describe yourself as a student? As a person?

List your extracurricular in-school and out of school activities, and note any important positions held, including positions of leadership, responsibility, etc.

Write a brief paragraph on what you hope I noticed about you as a student in my class. Include any project/assignment that you did particularly well in, and explain what you did.

If you were writing this recommendation, what major points about yourself would you want included?  Please think carefully about this answer, and answer completely - this is where you need to sell yourself!

When you are ready to send out applications, please give me one copy only of the common application. Do not fold the common application and do not staple it. Fill in all of your information, and I will make as many copies as needed.

If your application does not use the common app, please fill in all areas of the application, and give that to me.

DO NOT FOLD THE APPLICATION.  Please put all materials, forms, letters, etc. in a yellow envelope and write your name on the envelope.  On the front of the envelope list all of the colleges you are giving me apps for, and the dates they are due.

  An example:

    Peter Pan

       Harvard 11/1 early decision

       Rutgers 11/30 rolling

       Princeton  1/1 regular decision

       Ramapo College  1/1 priority decision

You will also need to give me a stamped, addressed envelope for each application. Use the high school address, with my name, for the return.

Use SELF SEAL envelopes ONLY!

GOOD LUCK in your college applications process!
